Elizabeth A. Prokopchow Newhard, 93, of Warren and formerly of Champion passed away peacefully under hospice care at 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 in Gillette Nursing Home in Warren following a period of declining health.
Elizabeth was born on July 10, 1924 in Boswell, Pennsylvania the daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine Duma Prokopchow Sr. and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and furthered her education with the United States Army during World War II where she obtained a degree in nursing and was a licensed registered nurse.
Mrs. Newhard was retired from the Copperweld Steel Company after many years where she worked in the plant hospital as lead nurse.
She was of the Catholic faith and a longtime member of St. John Paul II Parish on North Street in Warren. She was an avid knitter; enjoyed pampering her canine companion friends and enjoyed traveling. During her marriage, she and Raymond frequented Northfield Race Track where they owned several racing horses.
Mrs. Newhard is survived by a nephew Gerald R. (Marilyn) Kolar of Champion; three nieces Nancy (Joe) Gumont of Golden Valley, AZ, Linda K. Cessna of Ft. Pierce, FL and Cheryl (John) Gullotto of Jacksonville, FL; three great nephews Mark R. (Kristen) Kolar, Matthew D. (Julie) Kolar and Paul (Laura) Cessna; a great niece Laura C. (Kenneth) Haynie; and several great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Newhard was preceded in death on October 15, 2001 by her husband Raymond E. Newhard whom she married on May 25, 1968; two brothers Joseph Jr. and Anthony Prokopchow and by a sister Agnes A. Kolar.
Family will receive friends on Monday, July 2, 2018 from 9:00-9:50 a.m. in St. John Paul II Parish, 420 North Street, Warren, where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. in the church with Fr. Christopher Henyk officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Champion.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions in Elizabeth’s name take the form of donations to the Building Campaign Fund of St. John Paul II Parish, 1401 Moncrest Dr. NW, Warren, Ohio 44485.
